"A person who can seperate the true from the false, the good from
the bad, the pure from the impure, yet reject duality and cleave to
unity" - Paracelsus
I
have been working in the area of experimental musick since the mid
nineties. After
working mostly in collaboration with others for a few years I began to
also create works on my own using various modalities of Digital Signal
Processing. My second album, Entelechy Sow (self-released), was the
beginning of my processed field recording work. Ever
Now Those Before (released
on Maritimefist Glee Club), was the result of my computer based
composition skills being more fully honed. I continued working with DSP
and field recordings with two more albums (The Remaining Leaves Were
Not There and A Leaf On Plastic, both self
released). I actually began Spagirus playing the mountain
dulcimer and processing it in various
ways with digital and analog effects (my
dulcimer work can be heard on the albums Quanta Mandala Mundi, Vile
Idiot Hunger, and Lose The Mind Altogether and is the substance of my
most recent live sets and my new album Shravaka). I have now
returned to the dulcimer as my main mode of producing musick
because I prefer the physicality of playing this instrument (coupled
with various other instruments of the world and small toys) and the
range of interesting sounds I can get beyond just using the computer. I have done
most of my creative work while
going to school in
Norman, Oklahoma. However, I recently moved to Austin, Texas to find
more performance possibilities than were previously available and to be
in a more artistically congenial atmosphere.
Ultimately I am making musick
as an offering to potential listeners to give them something
aesthetically invigorating and useful. I want to provide an audial
experience for people that is both a practice in attentive listening
(which can serve as practice for attentiveness in all areas of life)
and provides something that they can continue to revisit while
discovering something new each time. I use current technology, coupled
with acoustic instruments and organic field recordings, because I think
these are the best ways to produce sound that is subtle, nuanced, and
interestingly challenging. I seek to provide a sonic environment that
will help
listeners grow and enrich their lives in some way. By providing sound
works with minute variations to pay attention to I am inviting people
to
participate in an exercise in listening and a space that has qualities
that may not all be noticed on the first or even second listen.
"Like meditation, listening gives one an inner strength, and this
strength may be accumulated in ever greater quantities as one listens."
